Brown Trout Fly Fishing on the Dalälven – Sweden's Classic Trout River

Brown Trout Fly Fishing on the Dalälven – Sweden's Classic Trout River

The Dalälven is one of Sweden's longest and most varied rivers, running from the mountains of Dalarna all the way to the Baltic coast. Along its upper and middle reaches it offers some of the most accessible and rewarding brown trout fly fishing in the country — clear water, wild fish and classic Swedish forest scenery.

Unlike the more remote northern rivers, the Dalälven is easy to reach, well managed and has a well-developed infrastructure for visiting anglers. It is an ideal destination for your first Swedish fly fishing trip.

The Best Beats

The most productive stretches for fly fishing are concentrated around Mockfjärd in Dalarna and Gysinge in Gästrikland. Here the river runs with purpose over a rocky, gravelly substrate — exactly the kind of water brown trout prefer. The clarity is often exceptional, allowing you to spot fish in their lies and make targeted presentations.

Further upstream toward Malung the river becomes narrower and faster, with a more intimate character that suits single-handed rod fishing and delicate dry fly presentations.

Season and Conditions

The season opens in late May and runs through to the end of October. June through August offers the best dry fly fishing, with prolific evening hatches of mayflies, caddis and midges when conditions are right. September and October fish well on nymphs and wet flies as water temperatures drop and the trout feed aggressively before winter.

Water levels vary considerably through the season. After heavy rain the river can colour up quickly — wait 48–72 hours for it to clear before visiting.

Flies That Work

Through the summer months an Elk Hair Caddis in size 14–16 is a consistently reliable dry fly. During mayfly hatches a Parachute Adams or Blue Winged Olive in sizes 16–18 often outperforms everything else. In the evenings a Klinkhammer Special fished in the film is devastating during sedge activity.

For nymph fishing, a Hare's Ear or Pheasant Tail in sizes 14–18 fished upstream on a tight line covers most situations. In faster water a heavier tungsten-bead version gets down to where the fish are holding.

Getting Your Licence

Day, week and season permits are available digitally at Sportfiskekortet.se. Licences are easy to purchase from anywhere in the world before your trip. Costs are very reasonable compared to other European trout fisheries.
