Dalarna is known for its painted red cottages, its midsummer celebrations and its deep forests. What fewer people know — outside the fly fishing community — is that it is home to some of the finest brown trout and grayling rivers in Scandinavia.

A region built around rivers
Dalarna's waters range from mountain lakes and forest ponds to winding rivers. In the north of the region you can fish for trout and grayling — species that thrive in the cold, clear, fast-running water that defines this landscape. The rivers here are not managed for tourism. Österdalälven — patience rewarded
Österdalälven is wide and shallow, mainly with gravel and rocks on the bottom — easy to wade, but demanding when it comes to approach and presentation. The river is best known for grayling, but the brown trout population is strong and the fish are large, educated and deeply suspicious of anything that doesn't look exactly right. JS Fly Fishing
Small flies dominate here — tippets of 0.12 and 0.14mm, leaders of 11 to 12 feet, and a selection of small mayfly imitations and CDC patterns in sizes 16 to 24. Rotälven — the forest river
Just to the north of Älvdalen, Rotälven branches off with swift currents — a forest river that tumbles down through cliffs and gorges before entering the main valley. Smaller, tighter and more demanding than Österdalälven, it rewards the angler who moves slowly and thinks carefully. JS Fly Fishing

When to go
The season opens in earnest from late May through June when hatches are at their most intense and trout feed actively throughout the day. In July, the hottest month, trout retreat from the sunlight — the best fishing shifts to mornings, evenings and into the night. Avoid the middle of the day in summer. Fish the edges of the light.
What to bring
Dalarna's rivers call for a versatile setup. A 7'6" to 9' rod in #3 or #4 weight covers most situations — shorter for the tight forest reaches of Rotälven, longer for the wide open stretches of Österdalälven. Fine tippets are essential: 0.12 to 0.14mm for the most technical presentations. A selection of small dry flies — CDC Elk Hair, Baetis imitations in sizes 18 to 24, Yellow May Dun in sizes 12 to 14 — will cover most of the season.
And patience. More patience than you think you need.
