Grayling Fly Fishing on the Vindelälven – Sweden's Wild Northern River

The Vindelälven flows undammed for its entire length through Västerbotten and Lapland — one of the last truly wild rivers in Sweden and protected as a national heritage waterway. That protection shows in the quality of the fishing. The grayling here are wild, strong and in exceptional condition in a river that has never been compromised by hydroelectric development.

Fishing the Vindelälven feels like stepping back in time. The forest comes down to the water's edge, the current runs clean and cold off the mountains, and on a good evening in July the entire river surface can be alive with rising grayling.

The Fish

Grayling from the Vindelälven are a different proposition from fish in more pressured waters. They are cautious, selective and capable of inspecting and rejecting your fly multiple times before either taking or drifting back to their lie. A grayling of 1.5 kg is a realistic possibility on the best beats — fish over 2 kg are caught every season.

The exceptional water clarity means you can often watch individual fish rise, inspect your offering, and either take or refuse. This makes for some of the most visual and technically demanding fly fishing in Scandinavia.

The Best Stretches

The finest grayling fishing is found between Vindeln in the south and Ammarnäs in the north. The stretch from Storuman to Sorsele is particularly good — wide gravel runs, clear pools and relatively easy wading access. The further upstream you go toward Ammarnäs, the wilder and more remote the fishing becomes.

Many anglers choose to canoe sections of the river, pulling out to fish promising runs and pools along the way. It is one of the finest ways to experience the Vindelälven.

Flies for Vindelälven Grayling

Fine presentations and small flies are the key. Use light tippet — 0.14 to 0.16 mm — and never go heavier than 0.18 mm unless the water is high and coloured.

CDC Midge in sizes 18–22 is indispensable for the most selective fish during heavy midge hatches. F-fly in sizes 14–16 covers caddis and general surface activity exceptionally well. Klinkhammer Special in sizes 14–18 is the go-to pattern during active emergences. For nymphing, a small Tungsten Jig Nymph in sizes 14–16 on a tight line is devastatingly effective.

Practical Information

Fishing permits are purchased locally in Vindeln or Sorsele. Wild camping along the bank is permitted under the Swedish right of public access. The nearest larger airport is Umeå, around 90 minutes from Vindeln by car.
