Salmon Fly Fishing on the Klarälven – Sweden's Legendary Salmon River
Share
Thex flows from the mountains of Norway's Femunden region, across the border into Värmland and all the way down to Lake Vänern — one of Scandinavia's longest river systems and home to one of Sweden's most storied Atlantic salmon runs. The fish that run this river have crossed the entire North Atlantic, survived commercial netting at sea and navigated hundreds of kilometres of freshwater to reach their spawning grounds. They are among the hardest-won fish in fly fishing.
The Character of the River
The Klarälven is a big river by Swedish standards — broad, powerful and with a character unlike the narrow northern streams. In its best salmon sections around Ekshärad and Edebäck, it forms wide, sweeping pools with clear gravel runs and classic holding lies. The water is often tea-coloured from the peat bogs upstream, giving it a distinctly Scandinavian feel.
Fishing from a boat is common in the deeper pools, while many of the classic lies can be covered wading the shallower margins with a long downstream swing.
Season and Timing
Atlantic salmon enter the Klarälven from midsummer and the season runs through to the end of September. Unlike some rivers where salmon fishing is primarily a morning and evening pursuit, the Klarälven can produce fish throughout the day — particularly in overcast conditions or when the river is running at a good height after rain.
The peak weeks are typically mid-July through mid-August when the river carries the highest numbers of fresh fish.
Techniques and Flies
The classic Scandinavian downstream swing is the dominant method — a floating or intermediate line, long leader and a fly fished on the dangle across the current. It is elegant, effective and deeply satisfying when a fresh salmon takes on the swing.
Ally's Shrimp, General Practitioner and Willie Gunn in sizes 4–10 are the proven classics. Adjust size according to water temperature and height. In warm low water go down to size 10–12 on a short tube or light single hook. In cold or high water fish a larger tube in sizes 4–6.
Booking Your Trip
Several fishing lodges and guesthouses operate along the river and can arrange permits, boats and local guiding. The nearest city is Karlstad, around 90 minutes from the prime beats. A local guide is strongly recommended for a first visit — knowledge of which pools are fishing and how to read the specific conditions of the Klarälven makes an enormous difference to your results.
